Rivian EV Battery Testing Training

Crystal Instruments Support Team (CIST) at Rivian in Normal, Illinois

The Crystal Instruments Support Team (CIST) recently visited Rivian in Normal, Illinois to provide training on EDM Dynamic Signal Analysis (DSA) and Vibration Control Systems (VCS) software for the battery test engineers. The training included a software overview focusing on vibration testing electric vehicle batteries.

Rivian engineers were guided through hands-on training using the high channel Spider-80Xi Vibration Test Controller and EDM-VCS software to perform random, sine and shock vibration tests. The Spider-80Xi high channel system performed exceptionally well controlling and measuring multiple locations on a live test with a test object fixed to the table.

Electric vehicle batteries typically experience a wide range of environmental conditions and require combined environmental testing to verify durability and safety during operation. EV battery testing often combines two or more test types at the same time to better simulate on-road environmental conditions. These test types vary but typically include vibration tests, humidity tests, and temperature tests. Pressure tests are not as common but are occasionally incorporated in the combined test.

Crystal Instruments controllers offer the convenience of one combined test report with coordinated testing time schedules to record CAN bus data, peak CAN data, time data, dynamic measurements (APS, FRF, frequency domain data, etc.), cycling data logging (voltage, current, battery, etc.) and more with accurate time synchronization. Users can also extract battery information through CAN bus and automate various actions including emergency shutdown.
